A little traveling music please…

I’m Sitting On Top Of The World

July 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Despite a couple of false starts, we finally made it to the top of the CN Tower. The tower, billed as the “world’s largest free-standing structure”, stands 1,815 feet 5 inches above sea level. There are 2 observation decks, with the height of the upper “sky pod” being 1,465 feet. The partly sunny day was an improvement over the previous days and allowed for fairly good visibility from the tower. While the structure itself is impressive and the 360-degree panoramic views are worth the trip to the top of the tower, I think the natural beauty of the Thousand Islands as seen from the SkyDeck made for a more majestic sight.

After completing our visit to the CN Tower, it was back on the road again for the 5-hour trip to Dearborn, Michigan.

A final thought on Toronto… It was nice to visit a place where in the middle of the day in early July, you can walk by a bar or restaurant and see a hockey game on the TV inside… or read about hockey in the newspaper… not something that would happen in Maryland!

We arrived in Dearborn, Michigan, in time for dinner. Later in the evening, we went out in search of July 4th fireworks. The hotel clerk told us that the fireworks from the Henry Ford Museum Independence Day celebration could be seen from a nearby street, where people parked their cars on the median strip and watched the fireworks show. We went over to that area and joined hundreds of other cars that just pulled off to the side of the road or on the grassy medians and waited for the show to start. Finally, around 10:30 or so, the fireworks began… much more impressive that the Canada Day celebration we watched in Gananoque earlier in the week.

On tap for Saturday… The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village…

Stay tuned,

Stu
